The Ozarks

 Last month I visited family in Missouri. I'd been through Missouri many years before, and remember it being mostly flat. I was travelling out of St. Louis towards Kansas City then. This time, I went southwest out of St. Louis. The road was like sailing the ocean over the waves. Up down one hill then up the next. I always thought the Ozarks were in the southwest corner of the state. It turns out pretty much the whole southern half of Missouri is Ozarks. The undulation leveled out a bit once I reached the Springfield Plateau in the southwest. But it was nowhere near as flat as Illinois.

The wildlife in the Ozarks is different from what I'm used to in Pennsylvania. However, I didn't get to see very many new critters. There are freshwater clams in Stockton Lake. I saw plenty of armadillos, but they were all dead. No roadrunners, no rattlesnakes, no scorpions, and no tarantulas. I saw some insects that I have at home, like a wheel bug, a milkweed bug, and the ubiquitous deer. Southern leopard frogs in a spring house at a Civil War battlefield was a nice surprise.

There was more forest than I expected to see. I got to check out some oak savanna. Most of the land in the Springfield Plateau that I saw was farmland. There were some crops, mostly corn, but the majority was cattle pasture.

It was nice to see some butterflies finally. Compared to last summer, I haven't seen very many this year. Apparently once you leave Bucks County they are everywhere. The Flight 93 memorial in western Pennsylvania has quite a few grasshoppers too. Turkeys flew across the road ahead of me somewhere in that area. Elsewhere, the sky was full of turkey vultures and hawks that I couldn't identify. A fox ran across the road ahead of me in Indiana.

Even though I didn't set out to explore nature on this trip, it still happened. It happens everywhere I go now that I've been trained to see things everywhere. Next time you are out and about, take a look around and notice what you see.

Migration


The days are getting shorter and cooler. Leaves are starting to turn and fall. Winter is approaching, and many animals are have already begun their seasonal migration. While some hibernate to avoid unfavorable seasonal habitat conditions, others move temporarily to more suitable habitat.
Migrations occur across all different animal classes: birds do it, and so do mammals, fish, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and crustaceans. Even some people do it. Florida and Arizona get plenty of snowbirds from up north every winter. More traditionally, nomadic tribes still exist in Africa and Asia living as they have for centuries.
We’re an ecology blog, not an anthropology blog so let’s forget about nomads for a minute. Perhaps the most visible migrations here in America are those of birds and monarch butterflies. Birds migrate to and from pretty much everywhere. Some stay within North America when migrating while others fly from pole to pole. Others, of course, are somewhere in between.
We’ll use the Baltimore oriole as an example of avian migration. They arrive in the eastern US from Central and northern South America in April and May. This is their breeding ground. They begin nesting right away and eggs usually hatch in June. Southern migration begins as early as July and has peaked by September.

Monarch butterflies journey to Mexico in a multi-generational migration. Northern monarchs go south to the oyamel fir trees in the mountains of central Mexico. Millions of them cover the trees. After winter, they head north again, laying eggs on milkweed plants. Caterpillars hatch in a few days and eat the plants before forming a chrysalis. A new butterfly emerges and continues the northward journey, stopping at milkweed to lay eggs and start the hatching and migrating process over again. The northernmost monarchs are able to return to Mexico in a single journey.

The pronghorn in Wyoming migrates vertically. It moves from summer grounds in Grand Teton National Park about 150 miles south to lower elevation in the sagebrush habitats of the Green River area. This is North America’s longest mammal migration.

Not all migration is seasonal. Zooplankton in the ocean migrate vertically through the water column on a daily basis. At night the move toward the surface, and by sunrise they are headed back to the briny deep. While a journey of hundreds or thousands of feet might not seem like much to you, keep in mind that these tiny critters probably can’t see as far as the other end of a yardstick.

Endangered Species

This week Nature Minute will take a look at something most have never seen before- endangered species. You may have seen one or two because there are so many species that are endangered, but most likely not because there are so few of each species. They come in all shapes and sizes, from lichens to flowers to trees and from insects to corals to snails to whales.
In legal terms, an endangered species is defined by the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as being in danger of becoming extinct. A companion term in ESA is a threatened species, which is under threat of becoming endangered. ESA requires protection for endangered and threatened species as well as their habitat, because how can a species survive without having a place to live?
While ESA is an American law, it also extends global protection to species listed as threatened or endangered wherever they may be found. For example, the cheetah is listed as a foreign endangered species. While US laws regarding the conservation of cheetahs and their habitat can’t be enforced in Africa, the extent of the law here at home prohibits trafficking in them and other foreign endangered species.
Currently there are close to 2000 threatened and endangered species just in the US. When a species is listed, the appropriate state and federal agencies must develop a recovery plan. The recovery plan outlines how to increase the species population and preserve habitat and specifies a target population to be considered sustainable so the species can be delisted. Lead federal agencies that oversee ESA listing and recovery plans are the US Fish and Wildlife Service for terrestrial species and National Marine Fisheries Service works with oceanic critters. Both partner with state fish and wildlife agencies, local and tribal governments, private organizations.
My time in the field gave me the opportunity to work on conservation projects aimed at species recovery. I was even lucky enough to see some of the species I was trying to help.
In the US, four of the five Pacific salmon species (pinks are excluded) are listed as threatened or endangered. I volunteered with the Nisqually Land Trust, an organization that works to preserve and enhance salmon habitat. Although the salmon is a fish, salmon habitat begins with healthy forests that keep the rivers cool and clean.

I also volunteered with the Center for Natural Lands Management on two prairie preserves. I removed invasive blackberries and Scotch broom from the Glacial Heritage Natural Area and also collected wildflower seeds from there and the Mima Mounds Natural Area. The work I did was to open space for native plants to grow and collect seeds for propagation at other sites. The prairies are home to the endangered Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly, Mazama pocket gopher, and golden paintbrush, a flower.

My list of endangered species that I’ve seen in their natural habitat is short, but probably longer than most other people’s. I’ve seen the beluga whale (Alaska), golden paintbrush (Washington), Chinook salmon (Washington), black-footed ferret (South Dakota), and West Indian manatee (Florida).

I am glad that we have ESA to protect endangered species. Several, such as the bald eagle and the alligator, are considered recovered and have been delisted. The road to recovery takes a long time, and sadly the list gets longer as new species are added before the existing species recover.

My only regret about ESA is that it takes a reactive approach to protecting species with critically low populations, rather than a proactive approach that prevents them from needing to be listed in the first place. Vanishing Prairies, Part 2

Today’s prairies are home to a dazzling array of wildflowers, as well as birds, butterflies, and mammals. Endangered prairie species, besides the golden paintbrush, are the Mazama pocket gopher, streaked horned lark, and Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly. They all depend on the prairie plants. Some critters that I’ve seen at the prairies include the osprey, northern harrier, and Puget blue butterfly. Bats and owls are also common, but I haven't seen them because I haven't gone there at night.

The gopher is endangered because it eats the plants that inhabit the prairie. No prairie, no plants, no gopher. The butterflies use the prairie plants as host plants for their caterpillars. No prairie, not plants, no butterflies. Streaked horned larks nest on bare ground. In western Washington, pretty much anything that is not forested is either oceanfront or developed, with the exception of the prairies (US Fish and Wildlife Service).

How did a region known for its forests wind up with this little-known prairie? The geology is fascinating and mystifying all at once. The prairies formed on glacial outwash, but the origins of the mounds remains a mystery to this day. The soil around them is dry and gravelly. The mounds, however, are made of black sandy loam mixed with gravel. There are several theories as to how they formed.

One theory is that the mound soils collected on top of glaciers in pits, then settled as mounds after the glaciers melted. Another is that they are wave peaks caused by soil that liquefied during earthquakes. Another theory is that following floods caused by a glacially dammed lake, sediment deposits collected when water flowed around vegetation, forming the mounds. There is a theory that the mounds were formed by erosion. My favorite theory is that pocket gophers built the mounds (Washington Department of Natural Resources). A lot of very industrious pocket gophers.

There are some prairies that are open to public access for hiking and wildlife viewing. Glacial Heritage Natural Area, where I took last week’s pictures, I owned by Thurston County and open only on Prairie Appreciation Day in May. Others owned by the State of Washington, such as Mima Mounds Natural Area and Scatter Creek Wildlife Area (also in Thurston County) are open year-round.

Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug

I was driving home from work last week and noticed what appeared to be a moth, judging by the face, stuck on my windshield wiper. The wings were flapping wildly in the breeze. When I got to a red light, they didn’t look like moth wings and I could see the legs were moving. This bug was still alive and trying to escape. I pulled over at the next chance I could so I could free this mystery critter. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at (or how it was still alive; half its body was smashed) until I happed upon it in a book I was flipping through. It was a caddisfly.
What is a caddisfly? They are an order of insect (Trichoptera) that is similar to moths and butterflies (order Lepidoptera) with hairy heads and larval cocoons. However, the caddisfly larva lives underwater and makes its case from material in the stream, such as small pebbles, held together by silk that it secretes from glands. And unlike moths, the wings of a caddisfly are not covered in fine scales (the “powder” that gets on your fingers if touch a moth or butterfly’s wings).1

Caddisfly larvae are a favorite meal for aquatic critters like salmon. An entire cohort of caddisflies emerges from their cases at once and moves toward the surface to begin a brief (two weeks) adulthood. It becomes a veritable smorgasbord for fish. Caddisflies are also an important indicator species. An indicator species is one that’s absence or presence is an indicator of the general health of an ecosystem. Caddisflies are sensitive to water pollution, so an abundant population of caddisflies is a sign of a healthy stream.2
