My Favorite State Parks

National parks get a lot of buzz, especially since the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016. But with 50 states to chose from, there are a lot of amazing state parks out there. Many are overlooked, as most people are only aware of their own state's parks. I've been to a few places, so here's a look at my Top 5 state parks that I've been to.

#5 Cape May Point State Park, New Jersey

Located at the southern tip of New Jersey where Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic, Cape May Point is a key birding location along the Atlantic flyway. The main feature is the lighthouse completed in 1859, there are a few miles of trails that wind through a varied landscape of beach, wetland, and forest habitats. The trails connect to an adjacent Audubon Society property, creating a complex of protected natural habitat in a popular vacation destination.

#4 Ohiopyle State Park, Pennsylvania

For thousands of years, the Youghiogheny River has snaked its way through the mountains of western Pennsylvania, cutting through rough terrain as it tumbles towards Pittsburgh. Today, Ohiopyle preserves a stretch of the river known for its waterfalls and rapids, surrounded by dense forest. In the 1750s, George Washington said the Youghiogheny could never be tamed, and because of its wild beauty, I hope he is right.

#3 Myakka River State Park, Florida

As the Florida State Parks website says, this is the REAL Florida. Myakka River is worlds away from the resorts, theme parks, and strip malls, and Florida Man stories but only minutes away by car. Leave your thoughts of the modern world behind as you trek through palm forest, wet and dry prairie, freshwater wetlands, and even a walkway in the treetops. Every bend in the trail presents new opportunities for wildlife watching, from fire ants to roseate spoonbills to alligators. Highlights include a boat tour when the river is high enough, and a tower that rises high above the surrounding trees.

#2 Custer State Park, South Dakota

Fall in love with the West at Custer. This park preserves mountain lakes, towering granite spires, and rolling prairie in the Black Hills. Custer State Park is most famous for its 18 mile Wildlife Loop Road, where you are almost guaranteed to see deer, elk, pronghorn, and the iconic bison. The Needles Highway winds though granite spires at elevations so much higher than the surrounding prairie, you'll feel on top of the world. To the native Sioux inhabitants, it was the top of their world.

#1 Larrabee State Park, Washington

My top state park is where the majestic forests of the Pacific Northwest meet the sea. Peaceful lakes drain through bubbling streams in a quiet forest, reaching the Salish Sea at rocky beaches. At low tide, sea urchins, anemones, and starfish briefly become part of our world while they wait for the incoming tide to return their world. If you find the right trail, you can sit cliffside and watch seagulls fly beneath your feet.

This list is subjective and based on no criteria at all. If you chose to visit these or any other parks, check conditions first and carry the 10 essentials. Be aware of all hazards including wildlife and weather. Remember to leave no trace.

Dead Zones

This week we’re taking a look at a problematic summer tradition: hypoxic dead zones. These are marine or aquatic areas that don’t have enough oxygen to support life. The most famous is probably the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Let’s look at dead zones, how they form, and what you can do to help prevent them.
The most common cause of dead zones is excessive nutrient runoff. Nutrients in this case are nitrogen and phosphorus, nutrients from plants. The main source of this nutrient runoff is agriculture, but it can also come from detergents, animal waste, and untreated sewage.

The nutrient overload leads to a sudden population boom in the local algae community. It seems paradoxical that algae, which produces oxygen, leads to an area without oxygen. First, when a large mat of algae covers the water’s surface it prevents oxygenation at the water/air interface. Then, when the algae dies and decomposes, that is where the oxygen disappears to. Mobile critters like fish can move to more oxygenated areas to survive, but something that can’t move or is very slow like a starfish or sea urchin will suffocate unless the situation clears up.

Sometimes the algae bloom is of a type that produces toxins. Sometimes the toxins cause fish kills. Shellfish can absorb the toxins through filter feeding and pass them on to predators and people. Algae toxins can even threaten public drinking water.

How can you help? Trying to stop non-point pollution seems hopeless, but if everyone ups their game a little bit it adds up and makes a difference. Simple steps you can take at home include limiting the amount of fertilizer you use for your lawn and garden, cleaning up after your pup, and washing your car in the grass rather than the driveway or street. Reducing fertilizer use reduces the amount of excess nitrogen and phosphorus washing into the storm drain and out to sea. If you’re already doing that, buy organic produce which doesn’t use any fertilizer or pesticide. Picking up your dog poop keeps the nitrogen and phosphorus from that source out of the system as well. Washing your car in the yard lets the phosphorus in the detergent soak into the yard rather than washing into the storm drain. Every little bit helps.

Keystone Species


Ever come home at the end of a long week at work, wondering how the place could function without you? It might feel like you’re the only one holding it all together, like a keystone. This week we’ll take a look at the keystone that holds an ecosystem together- keystone species. Without the keystone species, the ecosystem would collapse, or at least be severely altered.
Examples of keystone species are the gray wolf, limber pine, and sea otters. We’ll take a quick return trip to the lava fields of Idaho, then the kelp forests of the Pacific coast to see how limber pines and sea otters are the keystones of their neighborhoods. We learned about the gray wolf and the good work they do at Yellowstone back in September here.
The limber pine is one of the few trees I saw growing at Idaho’s Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Back in September I spotlighted Craters of the Moon in “Volcanic Idaho. In that blog post, I mentioned the diverse ecosystem found there. Much of it centers around the limber pine. Limber pine is a pioneer, one of the first to colonize an area following a disturbance, such as a volcanic eruption in Idaho. Its seeds, needles, and sap feed a multitude of mammals, insects, and birds. Without the limber pine, those critters would have to live elsewhere in Idaho, maybe even Utah or Wyoming.

Off the Pacific coast, one of the most important marine habitats is the kelp forest. The kelp hosts many species of fish, somewhat resembling a coral reef (sans coral, of course). The kelp also absorbs storm surge and carbon dioxide. However, kelp tastes delicious, at least according to sea urchins. Lucky for the kelp, sea otters think sea urchins are delicious. Without the otters keeping the urchins in check, the kelp forest becomes an undersea clear cut. Local biodiversity plummets.
